It is incredibly common to walk into a modern wellness space and feel an immediate sense of inadequacy. The performative nature of much of modern yoga culture can make the practice feel like an aesthetic display rather than a healing modality. Finding a genuine community requires looking for a completely different set of values.
Real People, Real Bodies
Our yoga community is not about perfect bodies or the perfect outfit. It is fundamentally about acceptance. It is about real people living real lives in real bodies. We work with what is actually present, rather than forcing the body into an idealized shape.
An Internal Practice, Not a Performance
In traditional, classical yoga—and certainly in the way that I practice and teach—there is no performance aspect. The practice is entirely internal.
"We learn from our bodies. Yes, we demonstrate. We show the actions of the poses. We work on how things can feel, what can be expanded. But there's nothing performative about it."
— Tiffany Bergin, C-IAYT
When you remove the pressure to perform, the community that forms is naturally supportive. You find yourself surrounded by people who are also doing the quiet, honest work of listening to their bodies, which creates an environment where everyone is easily and quickly taken into the fold.
